Fire Station No. 3

Kaptur & Ricciardi

1964 . Palm Springs

Commissioned by the City of Palm Springs and opened on November 14, 1964, Fire Station No. 3 answered the infrastructure needs of a city whose northern residential tracts had pushed far beyond the reach of its downtown stations. The building represented a turning point for architect Hugh Kaptur, who had been working unlicensed since arriving in Palm Springs in 1956. To qualify for the municipal commission, he formed a partnership with licensed architect Robert Ricciardi in 1961, a collaboration that also produced the Palm Springs Golf Course Clubhouse.

The station remains in active service as the home of Engine 443, a working piece of the city's mid-century expansion still fulfilling its original purpose six decades later. Kaptur would return to the building type a second time with Fire Station No. 4, opened in 1971, where his design took on a heavier, Mayan-inspired monumentality that he personally guided through restoration and expansion completed in 2019.
