Charles & Ray Eames

Charles Eames and Ray Eames were an American married couple of industrial designers who made significant historical contributions to the development of modern architecture and furniture through their collaborative work at the Eames Office. Charles secured an architecture scholarship at Washington University but left after two years due to his devotion to Frank Lloyd Wright's practices conflicting with his tutors. He met Ray Kaiser at Cranbrook Academy of Art in 1940, where he arrived on an industrial design fellowship and she was studying abstract painting. They married in June 1941 and relocated to Los Angeles, establishing their design office in 1943 in the former Bay Cities Garage in Venice, where they worked 13-hour days directing a team of collaborators for over four decades until 1988.

The Eameses believed in 'learning by doing' - extensively exploring needs and constraints of ideas before introducing them. They pioneered the use of innovative materials and manufacturing techniques, particularly bent plywood and fiberglass for mass-produced furniture. Their approach emphasized the marriage of function and beauty, seeking to create high-quality design that was accessible and economically viable. They viewed design as problem-solving across multiple disciplines, working seamlessly between furniture, architecture, exhibitions, and films. Their philosophy centered on experimentation, collaboration, and the belief that good design should improve daily life while being both practical and aesthetically pleasing.
