Eric Lloyd Wright, AIA was an American architect and the grandson of legendary architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Born in Los Angeles to Lloyd Wright (Frank Lloyd Wright Jr.) and Helen Taggart, Eric was immersed in architectural excellence from an early age. He received his architectural education through direct apprenticeships, working in his grandfather's firm from 1948-1956 on iconic projects like the Guggenheim Museum and Monona Terrace, then in his father's firm until 1978. He obtained his architectural license in 1967 and established his own practice, Eric Lloyd Wright Architecture and Planning, in 1978. Based in Malibu on land originally assembled by his father, Eric lived and worked there with his wife Mary, a watercolor artist, until his death at age 93 in March 2023.
Eric Lloyd Wright was a devoted practitioner of Organic Architecture, the philosophy pioneered by his grandfather Frank Lloyd Wright. He believed in design that worked harmoniously with nature and the environment, concepts that predated and influenced modern green building movements. His approach emphasized 'smart design' principles that integrated buildings with their natural surroundings. Through his nonprofit Wright Organic Resource Center, he provided educational programs to promote these sustainable design principles. His work focused primarily on residential projects, often collaborating with other architectural firms for construction while maintaining the organic design philosophy throughout his practice.
