Kauai Apartments

Hugh Kaptur

1962 . Palm Springs

The Kauai Apartments opened in 1962 as one of three Hawaiian-themed housing developments that appeared in South Palm Springs within a two-year window following Hawaiian statehood in 1959. Designed by Hugh Kaptur during his partnership with Joseph Ricciardi, the complex joined Royal Hawaiian Estates and Las Palmas Summit as residential expressions of Polynesian Pop culture, a movement more commonly associated with nightlife and commercial architecture. Kaptur had already explored island-adjacent design vocabulary with his Impala Lodge in 1958, which he advertised as "Indian Modern" with angular steel frames meant to evoke mountain profiles. The project marked the beginning of what would become a sustained multifamily practice spanning two decades.

The complex sits directly across from the Bahia Apartments on Grenfall Road, creating an unintentional tropical pairing: Polynesia facing the Caribbean on a single South Palm Springs street. Both complexes carry their island references in name and theme, designed by different architects for the same neighborhood in the early 1960s.
