Prudential Building

Donald Wexler

1969 . Palm Springs

The Prudential Building took shape in 1969 as the Ellermann Medical Building, designed by Donald A. Wexler Associates for professional offices along the eastward expansion of Palm Springs' institutional corridor. The project marked Wexler's second significant medical commission, following the Palm Springs Medical Clinic he had completed with Harrison in 1963. Positioned along Tahquitz Canyon Way between downtown and the airport, the building contributed to the city's growing network of professional and civic structures pushing east through the 1960s.

Inviting, simple structural forms wrap gently around an office plaza set within a landscaped garden. The design demonstrates Wexler's quieter register, a counterpoint to the steel houses and high-profile residential commissions that defined much of his practice. The building achieves its presence through restraint, organizing medical offices around outdoor space in a way that reads as definitive but unassuming.
