Veterinary Medical Building

Robert Ricciardi

1964 . Palm Springs

The Veterinary Medical Building was completed in 1964 by architect Robert H. Ricciardi at a moment when Palm Springs was transforming from seasonal resort to year-round city. A purpose-built veterinary clinic signals the presence of permanent residents with pets, rather than transient hotel guests, and the building sits alongside the Ellerman Medical Building, Palm Springs Medical Clinic, and Professional Park as evidence of professional infrastructure arriving in the same decade. The location on Oleander Road places it one block from the Torney Hospital Building, a 1945 survival from the wartime period when the El Mirador Hotel was requisitioned as Torney General Hospital, creating an unexpected timeline of medical facilities spanning military, human, and animal care.

The building appears on the city's survey of potentially eligible historic resources, though Ricciardi remains one of the least-documented figures in the desert modernist canon. His known work includes Fire Station No. 3, the Palm Springs Golf Course Clubhouse, the Gas Company Building, and homes in the Sunrise Park neighborhood, much of it produced during a 1961-62 partnership with Hugh Kaptur formed when Kaptur needed a licensed architect of record.
