Joseph Cather Newsom was a Canadian-American architect known for his prolific work on the West Coast and brief but notable practice in Philadelphia. Born in southern Ontario, Canada, he moved to California with his family by 1861. He apprenticed in the architectural firm of his older brothers John J. and Thomas D. Newsom before establishing a partnership with his brother Samuel in 1878. The brothers maintained offices in San Francisco, Oakland, and Los Angeles until the firm dissolved in 1888 due to personality differences.
Joseph continued alone in Los Angeles but struggled financially, prompting his move to Philadelphia in 1896 where he operated under the name 'The Up-To-Date Architecture' and published a periodical of the same name. His Philadelphia practice focused heavily on church design while also completing residential projects. He returned to California in 1900, settling permanently in the San Francisco/Oakland area by 1906, where he remained until his death in 1930. Newsom's architectural approach was characterized by picturesque and artistic design principles typical of the late Victorian era.
