Norms La Cienega

Norms La Cienega opened in 1957 as part of Norman Roybark's expanding restaurant empire, eight years after he launched the first Norms at Sunset and Vine in 1949. The ambitious used-car-salesman-turned-restaurateur envisioned a chain with a distinctive brand identity that could be replicated across multiple locations. He commissioned the influential architectural firm Armet & Davis, masters of Googie design, to create a flagship that would serve as both restaurant and three-dimensional advertisement. The recommendation came from restaurant equipment designer Stan Abrams, who collaborated to seamlessly integrate the kitchen and advised on modern furnishings, including wire chairs by Charles and Ray Eames. Pioneering Chinese American architect Helen Fong, working for Armet & Davis, designed many interior elements. Structural engineer Richard Bradshaw, who also worked on LAX's Theme Building, ensured the bold geometric forms could support the restaurant's ambitious design.

Architect James Black perfectly captured the building's exuberance: 'Everything that isn't zigging can safely be assumed to be zagging.' The restaurant showcases classic Googie architecture with its dramatic diamond-shaped roofline echoed by a monumental 'saw tooth pennant' neon sign spelling N-O-R-M-S. Angular walls, jutting roofs, and large glass windows create the signature space-age aesthetic designed to catch motorists' attention. The open, flowing floor plan features floor-to-ceiling glass walls, enhanced by subtropical landscaping visible from inside to create an outdoor patio effect. Modern materials, including plastics, stainless steel, and Formica countertops, complement the futuristic design. The car-friendly layout integrated parking and easy access, making architecture serve as advertising—the well-lit glass walls put restaurant activity on display for passing drivers, while geometric motifs throughout reinforced brand identity.
