Palm Springs Unified School District

E. Stewart Williams

1963 . Palm Springs

The Palm Springs Unified School District commissioned this administrative building in 1962 or 1963 to house its growing bureaucracy during California's postwar school construction boom, when baby boom enrollment forced districts to build at unprecedented rates and school administration itself became large enough to require purpose-built headquarters. E. Stewart Williams, who had already designed Frank Sinatra's house and the Coachella Valley Savings buildings, brought the same disciplined modernism to this decidedly unglamorous commission. The building still serves its original function as the district's administrative offices.

Williams deployed his restrained institutional mode rather than dramatic gestures: long uninterrupted rooflines, deep shading, and careful proportion define this low-slung horizontal building at the intersection of East Baristo Road and South Farrell Drive. When drought-tolerant desert landscaping replaced the original lawn in 2015, local observers noted that the change actually improved the building's reading, allowing its proportions to register more clearly against the natural landscape.
