Arthur & Nina Zwebell

Arthur B. Zwebell and Nina L. Zwebell, formerly Nina Jacobson, were a pioneering husband and wife design/build team who specialized in courtyard apartment architecture in Southern California. Arthur was born in Iowa and Nina in Illinois, but both established their careers and spent their later lives in Los Angeles County, where they became influential figures in the region's residential architecture during the 1920s.

The Zwebells were innovators in courtyard apartment design, creating intimate residential communities that balanced privacy with shared outdoor spaces. Their courtyard architecture provided an alternative to traditional apartment buildings by incorporating landscaped central courtyards that fostered a sense of community while maintaining individual unit privacy. This design approach was particularly well-suited to Southern California's climate and lifestyle.
