Wilshire United Methodist Church

Allison & Allison

1924 . Mid-Wilshire

The Wilshire United Methodist congregation commissioned this church in 1924, the same year the building was completed and the year the congregation itself was founded. Designed by the prominent Los Angeles firm Allison and Allison, the building served a rapidly developing stretch of Wilshire Boulevard during the neighborhood's early transformation from residential to institutional and commercial uses. The church quickly became a significant religious anchor in what would become the Wilshire Center district, establishing itself as a sanctuary for both worship and major civic events. Within its first two decades, the building hosted the weddings of two of Hollywood's most celebrated stars: actress and singer Jeanette MacDonald in 1937 and child star Shirley Temple in 1945.

The building combines Gothic Revival and Romanesque Revival architectural vocabularies, creating a distinctive ecclesiastical presence along the boulevard. The design employs characteristic elements from both traditions, including pointed arches and decorative stonework that reference medieval European church architecture while adapting these forms to Southern California's climate and materials. The sanctuary originally housed a substantial pipe organ that served as both a liturgical instrument and an architectural feature within the interior space. The massing and detailing reflect the firm's sophisticated approach to institutional design, balancing formal grandeur with functional clarity.
